If you live up North you probably do not understand homeowners associations but in the South it is almost expected.  I am not sure what started the trend but it is now the norm.  They will decide if you can have a fence, what kind of Classic Mailboxes you can have, the color of your house, what you can plant or do to you property and much more.  It my seem crazy but it also helps protect your property value.  You do not have to warn about someone having a car on blocks next door because they can’t.

Our community for example only allows Gaines Mailboxes or Keystone Mailboxes.  This keep some continuity to the neighborhood and  keeps the curb appeal constant.  I both like it and hate it.  I wish I could do whatever I wanted but also understand the dangers of allowing people to do anything.  Their is a guy that has been on the news and he has toilets and other junk all over his property.  He has been fighting the city saying it is his right and has even served jail time over it.  It is people like him that encourage the use of homeowners.
